AST 2  Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • chitty423-1453785716482_resizedIdentify when additional planning and travel techniques are required to travel safely through terrain.
  • Be familiar with Avalanche Danger Ratings verification techniques for personal use on a local scale.  This allows you to localize the avalanche forecast information and relate them more closely to the area you are riding in.
  • Be familiar with the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) technical model as a means to develop personal, local terrain ratings.
  • Use route finding to take advantage of nuances in terrain to manage personal risk. This is KEY to any successful big mountain journey
  • Use travel techniques in avalanche terrain appropriate to the avalanche conditions.
  • Proficiently carry out a companion rescue.  Your friends
    or families live may depend on your skill at rescue.
  • Understand the limits of their training.  Avalanche education
    and skill as ever evolving.  You will never know it all and regular practice is key

Itineraries

Classroom Instruction

Minimum 9.5 Hours

The first evening is typically comprised of a 3-4 hour class session. The rest of the "classroom" instruction time is completed during the morning and evening sessions of the field days.

3 Field Days

Time : 8:00 am

3 Days in the Field

Typically starting at 8am with a morning instructional / class session. These are long days, so come fresh and prepared. Field locations are dependent on learning objectives and environmental conditions.

Trip Includes

  • Minimum 9.5 hours of classroom instruction
  • Minimum of 3 days in the field.

Does not include

  • Trail fees
  • Transportation to trail heads
  • Snowmobile machine
  • Avalanche gear (rentals available)
